UC San Diego to Honor Entertainer Paula Abdul for Volunteer Work

Entertainer Paula Abdul is scheduled to be honored at UC San Diego Saturday for her volunteer work on behalf of youth.
She will receive the school’s Earl Warren College Humanitarian Award for being an ambassador of We.org. In that role, she helps to uplift and empower youth around the world, organizers said.
A pop music star and former judge on “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” Abdul has also adopted a school in Brooklyn and helped foster arts education in impoverished schools across the U.S., according to UCSD.
The honor is part of the school’s inaugural BEARL Academe Awards, which celebrate those who demonstrate excellence in promoting individuality, resolving conflict and celebrating all cultures.
The BEARL name combines a bear statue at the academic courtyard on campus with Earl Warren, the late California governor and chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Five others will also be honored at the event, including dermatologist Tess Mauricio, who has appeared on the television programs “The Talk,” and “Dr. Oz.”
Mauricio earned her undergraduate degree from UCSD and practices in Scripps Ranch.
